Governance And Governed

by Madhushree Sekher, Governance And Governed Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Governance And Governed books, Building, largely, on insights from India, and case studies in Brazil, China, and South Africa, this book provides insights into the contested topic of ‘governance and governed’ from a state–society inter-relationship perspective. It argues that the centrality of an understanding of state-governance today is rooted in concerns regarding diversities and contingencies of concrete political reality to address inequalities, exclusion and vulnerabilities. These countries are part of the BRICSs consortium, and have been recognised for their growth potential in the world economy. But their economic progress alone may not necessarily translate into a better quality of life. The approach here is not to focus on a particular understanding of governance, but to utilise a wider lens to understand the nature and extent of incremental processes in the different case-study contexts in order to offer a broader framework for procedural and substantive understanding of governance, rather than a prescription of a government and its activity of governing. The focus is on deriving practical lessons about governance process that are of interest to the wider development community.

Languages Identities And Intercultural Communication In South Africa And Beyond

by Russell H Kaschula, Languages Identities And Intercultural Communication In South Africa And Beyond Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Languages Identities And Intercultural Communication In South Africa And Beyond books, African countries and South Africa in particular, being multilingual and multicultural societies, make for exciting sociolinguistic and applied language analysis in order to tease out the complex relationship between language and identity. This book applies sociolinguistic theory, as well as critical language awareness and translanguaging with its many facets, to various communicative scenarios, both on the continent and in South Africa, in an accessible and practical way. Africa lends itself to such sociolinguistic analysis concerning language, identity and intercultural communication. This book reflects consciously on the North–South debate and the need for us to create our own ways of interpretation emanating from the South and speaking back to the North, and on issues that pertain to the South, including southern Africa. Aspects such as language and power, language planning, policy and implementation, culture, prejudice, social interaction, translanguaging, intercultural communication, education, gender and autoethnography are covered. This is a valuable resource for students studying African sociolinguistics, language and identity, and applied language studies. Anyone interested in the relationship between language and society on the African continent would also find the book easily accessible.

Southern Africa Post Apartheid

by Chris Landsberg, Southern Africa Post Apartheid Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Southern Africa Post Apartheid books, The publication of this timely book has been occasioned by the tenth anniversary celebrations of democracy in South Africa, the last country in southern Africa to be liberated. This book, which grew out of a November 2003 conference, goes beyond the parochial and uses the milestone of South Africa's democratic celebrations to focus on the health and quality of democracy and governance in southern Africa more broadly. In the spirit of ten years of democratisation in South Africa, the Centre for Policy Studies, the Institute for Democracy in South Africa and the Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy thought it appropriate to place the focus on the broader region and consider the state of governance and democratisation in southern Africa. The book acknowledges that the apartheid years hugely destabilised South Africa's neighbours and negatively impacted on the pan-African spirit throughout the continent. It recognises that because of both their common history and geography, the states of southern Africa have, in important aspects, a shared future. Thus a ten-year review project that focuses only on assessing conditions in South Africa since 1994 would be incomplete, and it is, therefore, proper that this book focuses on the broader southern Africa region.

Rights Based Litigation Urban Governance And Social Justice In South Africa

by Marius Pieterse, Rights Based Litigation Urban Governance And Social Justice In South Africa Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Rights Based Litigation Urban Governance And Social Justice In South Africa books, Rights-based Litigation, Urban Governance and Social Justice in South Africa considers the overlap between legal and everyday struggles for social and spatial justice in the particular context of Johannesburg, South Africa. Drawing from literature across disciplines of law, urban geography and urban planning, as well as from reported case-law concerning the invocation of constitutional rights in Johannesburg and other South African cities, the book critically examines whether, and to what extent, the invocation of legal rights before South African courts have contributed to the advancement of social justice in the city. It considers the impact of the legal assertion of different constituent aspects of the so-called "right to the city" on the many people simultaneously performing the right, the governance structures responsible for enabling and facilitating its enjoyment and, thirdly, the physical place in which it is performed. Drawing broad conclusions on the utility of rights-based litigation for the achievement of social change and spatial justice, this book will be of interest to students and scholars of South Africa, constitutional law, human rights law, regulatory law, sociology of rights, studies of law and society, urban studies, urban geography, governance studies, and development studies.
